The Sony Alpha A7S III is a mirrorless camera with a new 12.1 MPx full frame EXMOR R sensor and a new BIONZ XR image processor. It records up to 4K video at 120 frames per second at 10-bit 4:2:2 resolution and 15-degree dynamic range with ISO sensitivity settings from 40 to 409,600. The focusing system has 759 AF points that cover 92% of the sensor. Real-time autofocusing on the eyes has also been improved. New XAVC-HS (H.265) and new XAVC-S-I (All-I) codec, 16-bit RAW data output, S-Log profile, extended camera life and digital audio interface. The system architecture of the new Alpha 7S III has been redesigned from the ground up to deliver exceptional performance in both video recording and still photography. The all-new 12.1 MP (approximate effective MP) back-illuminated Exmor R™ CMOS full-frame image sensor utilizes a range of advanced light-capturing technologies that deliver high sensitivity with low noise in low-light conditions, eliminating the need for extensive lighting equipment. In addition to improved image quality, this new image sensor introduces focal-plane phase-detection autofocus (AF) to the S-series for the first time ever. The Alpha 7S III is also equipped with the new BIONZ XR™ image processor, which complements the image sensor and delivers up to eight times the processing power, minimizes processing latency, reduces the “rolling shutter” effect by up to three times, and powers many of the camera’s features for both still photography and video recording. The new system also features the world’s brightest and largest eye-level OLED electronic viewfinder, with a resolution of 9.44 million dots. This new model is also the world’s first camera to feature two CFexpress Type A memory card slots. This enables high-speed data transfer while maintaining a compact form factor.

Professional Video Recording Solution
The Alpha 7S III offers 4K video recording to internal memory at 120 frames per second with 10-bit color depth and 4:2:2 color sampling. This allows it to capture stunning videos. The new camera delivers a more flexible and efficient post-production workflow with a range of advanced video recording modes, such as All-intra mode and MPEG-H HEVC / H.265 (XAVC HS™) encoding. The Alpha 7S III makes it easy to integrate footage with other professional video cameras, as it offers three different color gamut settings: S-Gamut, S-Gamut3, and S-Gamut3.Cine. When using the S-Gamut3 or S-Gamut3.Cine color gamuts, users can easily combine footage captured with the Alpha 7S III with footage shot by professional video cameras. This simplifies the post-production workflow when working with multiple cameras. In addition to S-Log3 gamma curves, the Alpha 7S III supports the HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) picture profile, which requires minimal post-production. The Alpha 7S III also enables 16-bit RAW output to an external recording device via the HDMI Type A interface, offering additional flexibility in post-production.

Enhanced Image Quality
The new CMOS image sensor and BIONZ XR™ image processor featured in the Alpha 7S III deliver the legendary sensitivity of the S series with significantly improved color reproduction and texture rendering, resulting in better overall image quality. The base ISO sensitivity has been lowered to 80. The result is a standard ISO sensitivity range of 80–102,400 (expandable to 80–409,600 for video and 40–409,600 for stills), which offers more flexible ISO sensitivity and a wide dynamic range with low noise at all settings. As a result, image quality is improved by approximately one stop of noise reduction at medium and high sensitivity settings.
The reproduction of colors and textures in foliage, human skin, and other elements is ideal and consistent, regardless of the light source. Gradation has also been improved for better rendering of skin tones and enhanced roll-off in portraits. Auto White Balance (AWB) performance has also been improved—the new “Visible Light + IR Sensor” helps achieve more accurate white balance under artificial lighting, including fluorescent and LED lighting.

Advanced Autofocus for Hybrid Use
For the first time ever, the Alpha 7S series model, the Alpha 7S III, offers Fast Hybrid AF, which combines phase-detection and contrast-detection AF, enabling the camera to track subjects across a wide area with exceptional speed, precision, and smoothness—even when shooting with a shallow depth of field. Sony E-mount lenses enable precise focusing.

When shooting faster movements, Real-time Tracking and Real-time Eye AF are available to ensure continuous focus on the subject. Sony’s advanced Real-time Eye AF improves detection performance by 30% compared to the previous system, thanks to a new image processor. It ensures accurate and reliable detection, even if the subject looks away. You can activate Real-time Tracking simply by tapping the subject on the display. Real-time Eye AF is also activated simultaneously if the camera detects an eye.

Flexible Autofocus Settings for Video Recording
The A7 S III is equipped with several autofocus features for professional users, including seven AF Transition Speed settings that allow you to easily adjust smooth refocusing, and five sensitivity settings for changing focus on a subject (AF Subject Shift Sensitivity), which allow users to customize how easily the autofocus shifts focus or remains locked on the selected subject according to their needs.
The Touch Tracking feature not only allows users to activate Real-time Tracking but also to adjust the composition and shoot while using a gimbal. A new feature is the ability to focus by touch via the touchscreen or remotely using the Imaging Edge Mobile app when manual focus mode is activated.

New Heat Dissipation Design
The Alpha 7S III’s design has been redesigned to ensure efficient heat dissipation and prevent overheating—even during extended continuous video recording in 10-bit 4K 60p 4:2:2 quality for one hour or longer. Newly developed unique design

dissipates heat and keeps the image sensor and image processor within their normal operating temperature ranges, thereby preventing overheating. At the same time, the compact body size is maintained.

Movie Assist Feature
The Alpha 7S III is the first camera in the Alpha series to offer Active Mode. This mode provides support during particularly demanding handheld video shooting on the go, thanks to in-body five-axis optical image stabilization.

It is also the first E-mount Alpha body with a side-tilting display that features a variable tilt angle, making it ideal for shots when mounted on a gimbal, complex shooting angles, handheld shooting, and more. The display swivels sideways, up, and down and is equipped with a 3.0-inch touchscreen LCD panel with a resolution of 1.44 million dots, ensuring good visibility even in bright outdoor light.

A digital audio interface has been added to the camera’s Multi Interface (MI) shoe for cleaner audio recordings using a compatible Sony external microphone. Furthermore, thanks to the XLR-K3M adapter kit—which is compatible with the Alpha 7S III—it is now possible for the first time to capture four-channel 24-bit digital audio directly using an Alpha series camera. As with other MI-mount accessories, no cables or batteries are required. This provides unlimited freedom when shooting with the Alpha system.

Exceptional Photos
The Alpha 7S III is equipped with a Fast Hybrid AF system featuring 759 phase-detection points that cover 92% of the image sensor’s area. The camera also achieves high autofocus accuracy, focusing precisely and reliably even in low-light conditions down to EV-6. Continuous shooting is possible with both the electronic and mechanical shutters at speeds of up to 10 frames per second, or up to 8 frames per second in live view mode, allowing you to capture more than 1,000 uncompressed RAW images.

The Alpha 7S III is the world’s first camera to feature a 0.64 Quad-XGA electronic viewfinder with a resolution of 9.44 million dots (approx.), a high-resolution OLED display, and improved optics, delivering the highest resolution in its class. The Alpha 7S III’s viewfinder offers 0.90x magnification, a 41° diagonal field of view, and a 25 mm height of view for a clear image from corner to corner with minimal distortion. It is also dust-, fog-, and moisture-resistant, responds quickly, and features switchable modes for different types of subjects.

As the very first Sony digital camera, the Alpha 7S III supports the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format), which enables 10-bit gradation and advanced compression technology that preserves image quality while significantly reducing file size, thereby saving storage space. Photos taken in HEIF mode can be displayed on compatible Sony TVs with HDR (HLG) support, which deliver a realistic dynamic range, by connecting the Alpha 7S III directly via HDMI.

CFexpress Type A Memory Card for High-Speed Data Transfer
Another world-first feature of the Alpha 7S III is that it is equipped with two memory card slots that are compatible with CFexpress Type A cards, while also supporting UHS-I and UHS-II SDXC/SDHC cards. This enables high write and read speeds while keeping the camera body compact. CFexpress Type A cards are ideal for high-speed continuous shooting in RAW format, as well as for recording 4K 120P video with high data rates. They deliver next-generation write speeds, making it possible to quickly clear the buffer of cameras that generate large volumes of photo and video data. High-speed data transfer to a computer is possible at a speed approximately 1.7 times faster than when using an SD card. The two slots allow you to set an automatic switching mode without interrupting video recording, which extends the duration of continuous recording; this also applies to high-bitrate recording.

The Alpha 7S III features a redesigned grip for greater comfort and a secure hold, an improved dust removal function, and is also dust- and moisture-resistant, maximizing reliability in demanding conditions. It is equipped with a durable and reliable HDMI Type A connector and is the first camera in the Alpha series to support USB PD (Power Delivery), which allows for a higher voltage to be supplied from an external power source, enabling users to shoot photos and video for longer periods with minimal drain on the internal battery.

Advanced Connectivity for Professional Work Environments
The Alpha 7S III was designed and equipped with several advanced connectivity options to support photo and video journalists and sports photographers who need to share photos or videos as quickly as possible. The camera supports 5 GHz / 2.4 GHz wireless LAN (IEEE 802.11ac) and features MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) technology to improve communication quality using multiple antennas. As a result, it offers twice the speed compared to the Alpha 7R IV. It also features new support for USB tethering. When connected via a USB cable to a 5G-compatible device—such as the “Sony Xperia 1 II” smartphone—you can enjoy fast and stable file transfers via FTP over the 5G network.
