The Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS lens is the first superzoom in SONY's top-of-the-line G Master series. The 100 to 400mm range makes it a versatile focal length for shooting nature or sporting events. Dual linear and direct drive ultrasonic motors (Direct Drive SSM) provide lightning-fast response and precision when focusing and tracking the subject.

A fast zoom, or a steady one

The ring’s torque is adjustable: lighter when you want to sweep the range in one movement, firmer when you want to hold a focal length precisely. Until now only cine lenses offered this.

Stabilisation inside the lens

Built-in Optical SteadyShot settles the long end, where focal length multiplies every hand movement. The focus hold buttons on the barrel can be remapped in the camera menu.

Two ED elements and one Super ED

The very low dispersion Super ED element suppresses axial chromatic aberration — the most common cause of quality loss in telephoto lenses. Two ED elements handle the rest of the dispersion.

Magnesium-alloy chassis

The alloy gives rigidity without weight; 1,395 g is a good figure for this zoom range.

Fluorine coating up front

The front element does not hold dust or grime and wipes clean in one pass.

Dust and moisture resistance

The build is made for hard conditions, not just fine weather.

Speed and quality
Lens focusing is handled by a combination of a dual linear motor and DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) drive, the first of its kind ever. Thanks to this combination, the lens promises an instantaneous response that you can use, for example, when capturing action shots. For user adjustment, there is the option of adjusting the resistance of the zoom ring. The lens construction consists of 22 members in 16 groups. One Super ED member, providing extremely low dispersion and effectively suppressing axial chromatic aberration, a common cause of quality degradation in telephoto lenses, and two ED members, providing low image dispersion

New lens design
With a new lens body made from magnesium alloy components and other improvements, it contributes to the high durability in this lens segment. The weight of only 1395 g points to comfortable carrying, greater mobility and also pleasant handling with a lightweight body and more stable handheld shooting. Features and customisation options
For natural use, this lens has the ability to adjust the zoom ring torque and is the first Sony lens to feature this function. So you can set a lower torque to achieve a fast zoom, or conversely, increase it to achieve a slower and more stable zoom. There are functional focus lock buttons on the lens body. They can also be set for other functions from the camera menu. To extend the zoom range, you can use the SEL14TC and SEL20TC teleconverters.
