Ulanzi VL-120Bi: an overview of the 120 W light, its controls, Bowens mount and power options. Who is it for?
When building a smaller video studio, controllable white light often matters more than a long list of colour effects. The Ulanzi VL-120Bi offers a 120 W COB source, adjustable colour temperature of 2700–6500 K and a Bowens mount. It is mainly of interest to creators shooting interviews, portraits and product videos who want to adapt the light to the room and later expand the setup with a softbox. Before buying, though, pay attention to power: the version sold here comes without a mains adapter or battery.
1 / 4The 2700–6500 K range lets you match the light to a warmer interior as well as to daylight. Brightness can be varied from 0 to 100%, so you do not have to move the stand with every small exposure tweak. We see the practical benefit mainly when you shoot interviews repeatedly: once the scene is set, you can fine-tune it to the ambient light. The VL-120Bi is a Bi-Color model; for coloured RGB lighting you need a different light.
2 / 4The COB source on its own produces a different character of light than a large softbox. The standard Bowens mount lets you choose a suitable modifier for a portrait, a product or a wider scene. When planning your setup, therefore, do not judge the price of the body alone: factor in the stand and the light shaper as well. The softness of the resulting light depends on the size and distance of the modifier, not on the power rating alone. Accessories shown in the product photos may not be included in the package.
3 / 4Settings are available directly on the body, which has an LCD display, and also in the Ulanzi Connect app. You will appreciate remote control if the light sits behind a desk or high above the scene: you can make a change from the camera position and watch its effect on the image. For simple shoots, direct control on the light remains available; the app is an extra option, not a reason to complicate every setup with a phone.
4 / 4The VL-120Bi can be powered by a compatible DC adapter or a V-Mount battery. That is a useful option between a permanent studio and a location without an easily accessible socket. In Syntex's offer this is the light on its own, without an adapter or battery; before ordering a complete setup, check that they are suitable for this model. The stated 120 W power draw does not by itself determine battery runtime, and without a specific battery it cannot honestly be promised.
A good choice for creators who want to build a lighting scene systematically and already know what they will power the light with. A smaller pocket lamp is easier to carry, but the VL-120Bi offers more room for working with modifiers.
What we like about the design: Adjustable white, the Bowens standard and control both on the body and from a phone make sense for a gradually expanding studio.
What to bear in mind: Add power, a stand and possibly a modifier to the purchase price. This model does not offer RGB colours.
