Ulanzi VL49 RGB: a pocket light for colour accents. An overview of controls, battery and mounting options.
The white Ulanzi VL49 RGB is a small light for creators who want to add a splash of colour, fill in a detail or simply keep a basic lamp in the bag. It combines an RGB mode with adjustable white of 2500–9000 K and a built-in battery. Its greatest benefit comes close to the subject: six watts and a small emitting surface are a different tool from a large studio light with a softbox.
1 / 2A display on the back shows the settings, and the controls remain directly on the body of the lamp. The RGB mode lets you choose a colour tone, while the adjustable white lets you match a small fill light to its surroundings. In product photography, the VL49 can highlight the background or one part of an object. For general lighting of a larger space, however, judge the real reach and distance, not just the number of available colours.
2 / 2The built-in battery has a capacity of 2000 mAh and charges over USB-C. The manufacturer states roughly two hours at maximum brightness and up to ten hours at low output; the longer figure therefore does not apply to the brightest setting. The cold shoe, 1/4″ thread and magnet widen the placement options. Before using the magnet, always check that the surface is suitable and how the lamp actually holds in the intended position.
The VL49 RGB is interesting mainly as a supplementary creative light. It fits best with a creator who wants colour and flexible placement on a small scene, not a replacement for the main studio source.
What we like about the design: RGB and adjustable white, direct controls and several ways of mounting in a pocket-sized format.
What to bear in mind: The small emitting surface and 6 W output have clear limits at greater distances or when lighting a whole room.
