Ulanzi LM19: a foldable MagSafe light and stand. An overview of the attachment, adjustable white and power.
The Ulanzi LM19 is a foldable ring light for a phone, with magnetic attachment and its own rechargeable battery. Instead of a large setup, it offers a small accessory for video calls, selfies or short close-up shoots. What makes it interesting is the combination of adjustable white, a tilting joint and the option to use the light as a stand. In this review we focus on the black L049GBB1 variant and on who this compact format may suit.
1 / 4The LM19 attaches to a MagSafe-compatible phone or case. For other devices, the package includes a magnetic ring to stick on. The way of attaching is therefore not the same for every phone and case; check the right spot, the surface and the strength of the resulting connection. The magnetic connection serves to hold the light mechanically. The manufacturer does not promise any wireless phone charger function here.
2 / 4The 2500–8500 K range and 10–100% brightness control let you adapt close-up fill light to the environment. Two dials separate the choice of temperature from intensity, so you do not have to reach for the app for basic settings. The circular diffuser helps spread the light, but a small surface still has limited reach. The LM19 is above all a light close to the phone and the face, not a main source for a whole room.
3 / 4The tilting construction with a range of over 180° lets you adjust the direction of the light to the position of the phone. This is useful when switching between a video call and shooting a smaller object. The direction and distance of the light have a major effect on the result: a lamp that is too close or badly angled can create glare. Judge the setting by the image on the phone, not just by the position of the joint.
4 / 4Once unfolded, the LM19 can also work as a phone stand. On your desk you thus get two uses from one small accessory, for example for a short call or for watching a video. The built-in 400 mAh battery charges over USB-C; the manufacturer states approximately 90 minutes of charging. For longer work, keep an eye on the battery level and check the stability of your particular phone in the chosen position.
The LM19 makes sense where quick setup and a minimum of items in your pocket are what count. For a more distant shot or a permanent desk studio, a larger standalone light will be more suitable.
What we like about the design: A compact light with direct control of white and brightness, a tilting joint and a stand function.
What to bear in mind: The result depends on how close the light is and on a compatible attachment; the small body limits both output and battery capacity.
