Video Assist 7″ 12G HDR adds accurate monitoring, professional scopes and 10-bit recording up to 2160p60 to any SDI or HDMI camera.

Monitor, recorder and scopes in one

Video Assist connects to any camera with an SDI or HDMI output and replaces a separate monitor, recorder and measuring instrument – on set, in live production and when testing equipment.

Focus and exposure assist

Focus peaking, focus zoom, zebra, false color, histogram and frame guides are switched on directly on the touchscreen.

3D LUTs for monitoring and recording

Loads 17 and 33 point 3D LUTs. The look can be applied for monitoring only or baked into the recorded file.

Webcam output

Over USB-C it appears to a computer as a standard 1080p webcam – for OBS, Zoom, YouTube Live or Skype.

Digital slate and metadata

Swipe from the edge of the screen to open the digital slate; take numbers can increment automatically and the metadata carries over to DaVinci Resolve.

Improve any camera

SDI and HDMI connectivity adds a larger touchscreen, focus assist, zebra, false color, histogram and other tools for confident focus and exposure. Rig the monitor wherever it is most comfortable to see, giving the operator, assistant and director better awareness of the shot.

Edit-ready files

10-bit Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHR recording provides higher quality than the internal codecs of many cameras, from any camera with an SDI or HDMI output. Files open without transcoding in DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro on all common operating systems.

Super bright wide-gamut HDR display

2500 nits brightness allows work even outdoors in direct sunlight. The display covers a wide P3 color gamut and supports HDR10 and Hybrid Log Gamma; the SDI and HDMI inputs detect HDR signals automatically, files are tagged with the correct HDR information and the scopes have HDR graticules.

Blackmagic RAW from supported cameras

The 12G HDR models record 12-bit Blackmagic RAW from supported Canon, Fujifilm, Leica, Nikon, Panasonic, Sigma, Sony and Z CAM cameras. Wide dynamic range is preserved and ISO, white balance and exposure can be changed later in post production; 3D LUTs are stored in the metadata only.

Scopes always available

Waveform, vectorscope, RGB parade and histogram can be displayed directly on the monitor without a separate measuring instrument – full screen, as a transparent overlay on the picture or with a small picture in picture view in the corner. Ideal for checking camera exposure and signal levels against broadcast standards.

Two SD slots and external USB-C disk

Two UHS-II SD card slots allow uninterrupted recording: when one card fills up, the recorder continues on the other. Via the USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 port it also records to an external disk with far more capacity that can be edited from directly; disks are managed in the menu on the touchscreen.

Professional audio and mini XLR inputs

Two balanced mini XLR inputs with phantom power connect microphones or an external mixer directly to the monitor. Audio is recorded at 48 kHz and 24 bit, 2, 4, 8 or 16 channels can be recorded from SDI and levels are shown on audio meters with VU or PPM ballistics. A 3.5 mm headphone output is provided for monitoring.

Two NP-F batteries and locking 12 V connector

The rear has two slots for Sony NP-F (L-Series) batteries that can be changed one at a time without interrupting recording. The included 12 V power supply connects with a locking connector that will not pull out when moving the rig. Batteries are not included, an NP-F battery USB charger is.

Connections

The left side has two mini XLR analog audio inputs, 12G-SDI input and output and HDMI 2.0a input and output. The right side has the power button, LANC port, headphone output, two SD card slots and a locking +12 V external power input.

Rear and bottom

The rear has two slots for Sony NP-F batteries, with the tally light on the top edge. The bottom has the USB-C port and mounting points; further mounting points are on the top.

Details for the 7″ 12G HDR workflow

Video Assist 7″ 12G HDR is a monitor and recorder for HD, Ultra HD, 2K and 4K DCI video from SDI or HDMI sources. The bright 2,500 cd/m² HDR display, 3D LUTs, scopes and exposure and focus tools are complemented by recording of 10-bit 4:2:2 ProRes or DNx and, with compatible cameras, 12-bit Blackmagic RAW.

The model has two SD card slots for continuous recording, recording to external USB-C disks, two mini XLR inputs with 48 V phantom power and full-size BNC connectors. Power comes from Sony L-Series batteries or the included power supply.

The 12G-SDI and HDMI 2.0 inputs accept formats up to 2160p60; SD, HD, 2K, Ultra HD and 4K DCI are supported. The touchscreen shows transport controls, timecode, video standard, media status, audio meters, scopes and 17 or 33 point 3D LUTs.

Sources can be recorded to UHS-II SD cards or external USB-C disks. Swapping cards between the two slots allows uninterrupted recording.
