Blackmagic Design Announces Ultra HD Recording for HyperDeck Studio Pro
PRESS RELEASE
April 11, 2013
Blackmagic Design announced a new software update for its HyperDeck Studio Pro SSD recorder/player that will add Ultra HD recording in Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) format. This update will be available in May as a free update for all HyperDeck Studio Pro customers. HyperDeck Studio Pro will be demonstrated on the Blackmagic Design NAB 2013 booth at #SL218.
When originally released, HyperDeck Studio Pro featured an advanced design with Ultra HD playback as well as SD and HD recording and playback. With this new update, customers will be able to record Ultra HD and use HyperDeck Studio Pro as a broadcast recorder for Ultra HD recording. The choice of ProRes 422 (HQ) means Ultra HD records at incredible quality while creating files that are fully compatible with editing software. ProRes 422 (HQ) also means Ultra HD recording can be done using a single SSD.
The new Ultra HD recording feature of HyperDeck Studio Pro makes it a perfect match for the ATEM Production Studio 4K for doing full live productions in Ultra HD. In addition to this Ultra HD recording feature, HyperDeck Studio Pro was recently upgraded with 6G-SDI connections. All models now support HDMI Ultra HD input and output using a single HDMI cable.
“We are so pleased to be able to update HyperDeck Studio Pro to allow Ultra HD recording and we think this is extremely exciting as now we have an Ultra HD broadcast deck for under two thousand dollars. This would have been impossible to imagine only a few years ago!” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “It’s the perfect choice as a mastering recorder for live production with our amazing ATEM Production Studio 4K and now we have the whole workflow covered for Ultra HD live production!
About HyperDeck Studio Pro
HyperDeck Studio Pro is an advanced SSD recorder that includes powerful new features such as 4 channels of 3 Gb/s SDI in and out, built-in high speed Thunderbolt connection, as well as full HDMI and analog in and out including standard XLR connectors for audio and timecode. HyperDeck Studio Pro features higher processing power and quality which allows full Ultra HD recording and playback from a single SSD disk using ProRes 422 (HQ) compression, providing four times the resolution of regular 1080 HD video.
HyperDeck Studio features a beautiful user friendly VTR style design with function buttons, a jog wheel for jog and shuttle, plus external RS-422 control. The high resolution LCD screen displays timecode and transport information, plus a full color thumbnail preview of the current clip in record and playback. Crystal look buttons give customers full transport control just like a broadcast deck.
HyperDeck Studio Pro fits easily into outside broadcast vans or a master control room. It’s perfect for on set recording and viewing of dailies, or as a video server or for replays at live events. With new multi channel connections, Thunderbolt port and Ultra HD playback, HyperDeck Studio Pro is also perfect for digital signage, and the unit is ideal for feature film work as the single device can instantly switch between SD, HD, 2K and Ultra HD playback.
HyperDeck Studio Pro records universally compatible QuickTime files in uncompressed 10 bit, DNxHD and ProRes so the files stored on disk can be used with virtually any editing, color correction or finishing tools, such as Final Cut Pro X, Premiere Pro, After Effects, DaVinci Resolve and more.
When connected to a computer via the new high speed Thunderbolt port, HyperDeck Studio Pro will capture and playback direct to any Thunderbolt based computer, giving customers full compatibility with popular software including Final Cut Pro X, Final Cut Pro 7, Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer 6, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Photoshop and more. Also included is Blackmagic Design’s UltraScope software, which enables customers to use the Thunderbolt connection for full waveform monitoring and scopes direct from HyperDeck.

Blackmagic Design Announces World’s First 6G-SDI Products Are Shipping!
PRESS RELEASE
April 10, 2013
Blackmagic Design announced that it has adopted 6G-SDI video for multiple products, including some that are already shipping. This 6G-SDI has been included when these products were originally shipped with software now being released to add the 6G-SDI Ultra HD formats to these products.
In addition, at NAB 2013, Blackmagic Design is introducing multiple new products that support 6G-SDI connections, including the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K, ATEM Production Studio 4K live production studio, Blackmagic Audio Monitor and ATEM Studio Converter 2. All of these products will support Ultra HD video resolutions, meaning that Blackmagic Design has a complete workflow for both live production and post production that supports Ultra HD today.
6G-SDI is ideal for Ultra HD interconnects in the television industry because it allows Ultra HD video to be sent down a single common BNC type cable, is low cost and switches between SD, HD and Ultra HD formats. This means that any Ultra HD equipped product that supports 6G-SDI is able to operate in regular SD and HD video formats using the same BNC connections. Then when the customer wants to do work in Ultra HD, they simply need to switch the product over and it will now operate in Ultra HD and the SDI connections will switch up to 6G-SDI speeds allowing Ultra HD input and output.
6G-SDI is the only solution to allow Ultra HD products to be integrated into current SDI based television systems. 6G-SDI is also the lowest cost way to offer robust broadcast grade Ultra HD interconnects allowing lower cost Ultra HD products to be built.
Ultra HD is fully compatible with HD-SDI and SD-SDI equipment. 6G-SDI switches between 4 different television rates all on the same BNC connector. This means customers can purchase products with 6G-SDI running at 6 Gb/s speeds and then switch them to 270 Mb/s standard definition speeds, 1.5 Gb/s regular HD-SDI speeds or 3 Gb/s 3G-SDI speeds.
“When new video resolutions are introduced for the first time, initially customers are not really producing much content in that new format. However customers do like to have future proof hardware so we think 6G-SDI is the ideal solution because any 6G-SDI product can simply plug into regular SD and HD-SDI based systems,” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “This means customers can buy our amazing new Ultra HD products and just use them for SD or HD work, but then are ready the moment they need to do an Ultra HD job and can switch over and use Ultra HD immediately without anything extra to purchase! With a full live production switcher supporting Ultra HD and under $2K, we think even people starting out in the television industry will be running Ultra HD live production and that is very exciting!”
Availability and Price
HyperDeck Studio Pro, UltraStudio 4K, DeckLink 4K Extreme and ATEM Production Studio 4K with 6G-SDI connections are shipping now from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide. Blackmagic Audio Monitor and ATEM Studio Converter with 6G-SDI will be shipping in May.

Blackmagic Design Announces DaVinci Resolve 10
PRESS RELEASE
April 10, 2013
Blackmagic Design announced DaVinci Resolve 10, a major upgrade that includes new features for integrating the workflows of multiple different software products used in the film and television industry. DaVinci Resolve 10 has upgraded on set tools, upgraded editing features, support for OpenFX plug ins as well as new tools for delivering final project masters to cinemas.DaVinci Resolve 10 will be demonstrated on the Blackmagic Design NAB 2013 booth at #SL218.
DaVinci Resolve 10 has been developed to simplify the integration of different software tools used in the film and television industry, allowing timelines to be moved into and out of DaVinci Resolve and other edit software such as Final Cut Pro, Avid and Premiere Pro.
As workflows have changed, more post production is now started on set during the shoot. Lighting and other aspects of the shoot are also often verified based on color correction checks and DaVinci Resolve 10 has new powerful tools to manage this process. The new Resolve Live feature allows color grading direct from the video input live with full creative power such as primaries, secondaries, power windows, custom curves and more. Grades can be stored and then relinked when the camera files are loaded.
DaVinci Resolve 10 includes enhanced editing features and allows online finishing of edits performed in other popular editing software. This means multiple users can submit scenes in large complex jobs from the applications they prefer to use, and DaVinci Resolve 10 can finish online from the original camera RAW files for dramatically better quality than would be available when finishing in a standard NLE software package. If any scene needs additional editing, it can be moved back to the NLE software letting editors use the tools they love.
New editing features include full multi track editing with 16 channels of audio per clip and unlimited video and audio tracks in the timeline. Audio can be synced or trimmed and dragged independently to the timeline. Other new editing features include extensive ripple, roll, slide and slip clip trimming support which display dynamically on the timeline and viewer. The viewer also allows split screen display to show in and out points of adjacent clips.
A good example of the online editing process is when an edit has been completed in Final Cut Pro X that includes mixed frame rates, mixed media types, multiple audio tracks and even color corrections. DaVinci Resolve 10 will support import of that project via XML and will online it including full translation of all these elements while rendering the master from the original RAW camera files. This means that Final Cut Pro X editors can use DaVinci Resolve 10 as the tool to online their work for cinema release and generate the Digital Cinema Package file directly from the camera RAW files.
Editing in DaVinci Resolve 10 also includes a powerful title tool with static, lower third, scroll and crawl titles with multiple fonts, size, drop shadow and XY positioning. Timelines in DaVinci Resolve 10 also include the support of compound clips with multiple elements including multiple video and audio tracks. Also, DaVinci Resolve 10 can be used for stereoscopic 3D projects with full support for left and right eye clips in the media pool and the edit timeline. Using timecode and reel name, DaVinci Resolve 10 will automatically associate the left and right eye of the stereoscopic clips.
Color correction features have been upgraded in DaVinci Resolve 10, including support for industry standard OpenFX plug ins with an unlimited number of plug ins per clip. There are now unlimited power windows per corrector node and the new Gradient PowerWindow™ lets colorists quickly add a gradient across the image. Other new color correction features include copy and paste of tracking data, motion effects including spatial and temporal noise reduction and motion blur effects.
For project delivery, DaVinci Resolve 10 includes full audio track visibility in the deliver window timeline as well as EasyDCP integration so users can render directly from their project timeline into a Digital Cinema Package for release to theaters. Because DaVinci Resolve 10 allows rendering from the camera RAW file directly to the Digital Cinema Package files in the highest quality 32 bit float, there is simply no better quality possible for a cinema release master. Customers simply need to purchase a license from EasyDCP to enable this feature.
DaVinci Resolve 10 also supports additional media types and continues to be the industry leader in file based workflows because it operates with virtually all video file types available. New formats include JPEG 2000 decoding and encoding, AVI clip decoding, playback and more.
“One thing I have found extremely frustrating over the last few years is the incompatibility between software tools for video. I think it makes life very hard for people working in post production where multiple people are working on different parts of the job and using all kinds of different software tools. With DaVinci Resolve 10 we have worked hard to help all these tools work together, depending on what the customer wants to do,” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “This is what customers actually need and we think they will love all the work we have done to help make this high end workflow simple and easy. We think customers will love the powerful new on set tools, online editing and finishing, color correction updates and project delivery features in this massive software update!”
About DaVinci Resolve
Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve is the world’s highest performance on set, editing and color correction solution for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux computers. DaVinci Resolve supports more real time color correction than any other system because it’s not limited by the performance of the computer it’s running on. DaVinci Resolve eliminates this performance barrier because it’s based on a cluster of high performance GPU cards, so all processing is always real time. DaVinci Resolve has the power of a true real time performance solution so handles complex color grades even when using dozens of primaries, secondaries, Power Windows™, multi point tracking, blurs, and more. DaVinci Resolve provides incredible performance in a low cost solution which can be easily upgraded by adding extra GPU’s for supercomputer power to handle 4K resolutions, stereoscopic 3D and real time grading direct from raw camera files such as ARRI RAW, RED RAW and Sony RAW files which can be handled with ease.
