Press Release
The world’s first 12G-SDI mixed format, high frame rate router!
Blackmagic Design announced the Smart Videohub 12G 40x40, an incredibly advanced model of the Smart Videohub router family with 12G-SDI technology, allowing all SDI video formats up to 2160p60 to be routed all on the same router, all at the same time. Smart Videohub 12G 40x40 will be priced at 4,675 EUR ex. VAT in May.
With broadcasters using high frame rates for fast live action sports, now with the move to Ultra HD underway, broadcasters are also looking to ensure all equipment purchased can support these same frame rates as well as adding Ultra HD support. This means broadcasters can be assured that when they need Ultra HD, they can instantly switch over and all their equipment will support Ultra HD at frame rates up to 60 fps. 12G-SDI is the only video connection standard that allows this while retaining compatibility with existing SD and HD equipment.
Smart Videohub 12G has been developed to meet the needs of these broadcasters as it operates identically to other Smart Videohub models however because it includes a native 12G-SDI based design with full SDI re-clocking at 12G-SDI rates, it can handle any SD, HD or Ultra HD video format, all on the same router, all at the same time. A broadcaster can then connect 12G-SDI based equipment and Smart Videohub 12G will route these high speed SDI signals along with all other equipment in the facility.
With 12G-SDI support in all input and output SDI connections, regular SD, HD-SDI, 3G-SDI and 6G-SDI performance is greatly improved versus slower SDI routers, so even if the customer does not need 12G-SDI, the 12G-SDI connectors and electronics are of such high quality and performance, that regular SDI connections are able to run much longer distances.
Smart Videohub 12G 40x40 is even ideal on the road for things like live sporting events where high frame rate Ultra HD makes the fast motion and action look incredible! Each frame is like a crystal clear still image that will make viewers feel like they’re at the event. On larger multi camera productions, there are often more camera feeds than switcher inputs. Adding a SmartVideohub 12G 40x40 gives customers the flexibility to connect up to 40 additional cameras and route them to a live switcher without ever having to pull cables to switch inputs!
Smart Videohub 12G 40x40 shares many of its features with the rest of the Smart Videohub family, including an elegant machined metal front panel with full router control as well as built in, super bright 5” LCD monitor. The super fast, industrial strength 12G-SDI connections allow high resolution, high frame rate Ultra HD 2160p60 video using a single SDI connection. Because they’re multi rate, they automatically change speed and work with all existing SD-SDI, HD-SDI, 3G-SDI, 6G-SDI and 12G-SDI equipment. This means customers get the flexibility to work in any television format they want today while being ready for the rapidly growing high frame rate Ultra HD formats of tomorrow!
Using the front panel, customers can perform direct entry of router crosspoints using buttons, or they can use Blackmagic Design’s revolutionary Visual Routing which combines the spin knob control and button entry with easy to read on screen router labels over live video from the inputs. When any input or output is selected, the video is displayed live on screen so customers can see their router connections as video while they scroll the knob to select routing. Visual routing is exclusive to Blackmagic’s Smart Videohub family and it lets customers route with confidence because they can route video simply by looking at it!
In addition to its advanced 12G-SDI connections, Blackmagic Smart Videohub 12G 40x40 includes full front panel controls, dual built in power supplies for redundant power and increased reliability, external ethernet control, RS422, and support for tri-sync and black burst reference. The router can also be controlled remotely via Ethernet using Blackmagic Design router control software for Mac OS X and Windows, or with the Blackmagic Smart Control and Master Control hardware router control panels.
Smart Videohub 12G 40x40 Key Features
Features 40 multi rate 12G-SDI inputs and 40 multi rate 12G-SDI outputs that support auto switching of all SD, HD and Ultra HD formats.
Built in re-clocking on all 12G-SDI outputs, automatically rate adapts to routed video format.
Built in control panel with dedicated source buttons allows direct entry with spin knob control.
Built in large LCD monitor to display routing information and live video for visual routing.
Take and clear buttons allow confirmation of selected crosspoint before going live.

Press Release
Teranex Minis are rack mountable, include front panel controls, and feature 12G-SDI!
Blackmagic Design announced Teranex Mini, a next generation family of video converters featuring advanced 12G-SDI technology, award winning Teranex quality, front panel controls and LCD, built in power supply and support for all SD, HD and Ultra HD formats up to 2160p60. Teranex Minis will retail from 465 EUR.
Teranex Mini features a revolutionary design which has been developed to solve problems with regular mini converters. These problems include issues with dissipating the heat generated from high speed 12G-SDI, the cumbersome external power supplies, the inability to use standard XLR connectors and the limited controls on mini converters that are usually crude switches. Mini converters are also generally ugly so are not suitable for use when visible to clients so regular mini converters are only installed in locations where they can be hidden.
Blackmagic Design's new Teranex Minis solve all these problems by utilizing a better industrial design. Teranex Minis are attractive so can be positioned on desktops and they can also be rack mounted. This means, unlike regular mini converters, Teranex Minis are not limited to a single type of installation as they can be rack mounted or used separately whenever the user needs. Teranex Minis are also very small so they can be hidden around facilities just like regular mini converters.
Teranex Minis easily handle the speeds of 12G-SDI without overheating, which means customers get ultra modern conversion that supports all video formats from SD, to HD and Ultra HD. 12G-SDI allows Teranex Minis to operate in all video standards up to 2160p60 which is Ultra HD up to 60 fps all on a single BNC cable. 12G-SDI also means the same converters can be used on all older SD and HD equipment because they simply change video standards automatically.
One of the most innovative features of the new Teranex Minis is they feature an optional “smart” front panel that includes a spin knob, color LCD and multiple buttons. This means the user can simply remove the basic front panel from a Teranex Mini and replace it with a Teranex Mini Smart Panel to allow full setup and control from the front panel. Users can see the video being converted, monitor audio levels and even verify timecode and the video standard being converted. This allows broadcasters to simply walk up to the front panel and change settings and verify conversion, a vital feature when used in mission critical broadcast environments.
Teranex Minis have many other benefits, including a built in power supply, eliminating external power supplies for a totally reliable power connection. Also included in all models is built in Ethernet so Teranex Minis can be remotely administered from a central location using Blackmagic Design's new Converter Utility for Windows and Mac OS X. This Ethernet connection can also power the converter so Teranex Minis don’t even need to be connected to power if they are connected to a “Power on Ethernet” switch. This power on Ethernet allows Teranex Minis to have a reliable backup power supply, or multiple units can be powered from the one switch, eliminating all power cabling. This simplifies installation when multiple Teranex Minis are rack mounted.
The new Teranex Mini design also features proper XLR connectors for balanced analog audio, AES/EBU and timecode connections. This means audio connections use the cables the customer already has and the audio connections click and lock in for reliability. Teranex Minis have completely redesigned audio electronics with extremely low noise floor of more than -115dBFS for the highest quality audio possible in a mini converter.
Teranex Minis also include true Teranex up and down conversions. For example, when a Teranex Mini SDI to HDMI model is plugged into a HD based HDMI television, but an Ultra HD 60 fps signal is connected, the Teranex Mini will automatically detect the television cannot handle Ultra HD and down convert to HD to allow the television to display an image.
Built using high quality Teranex video processing technology, Teranex Mini is ideal for all broadcast, post production and professional video applications. SDI re-clocking and low jitter means customers can use longer cables and when converting to analog, Teranex Mini uses 12-bit video processing to ensure extremely low noise. Teranex up and down scaling is used for the highest possible quality conversions between SD, HD and Ultra HD.
Unlike card based rack converters which are expensive and cannot handle the high speed of 6G-SDI or 12G-SDI, Teranex Minis can be racked in any combination so customers can get exactly the conversions they need, in any video format they need, from now and in the future. The innovative and smart thermal design with crossflow cooling keeps Teranex Mini running perfectly, even when rack mounted side by side and in tough environments with limited airflow.
There are 6 models of Teranex Minis based on the conversion required. These include SDI to HDMI, HDMI to SDI, SDI to Analog, Analog to SDI, SDI to Audio and Audio to SDI. There is also 6 optical fiber models that include a single SDI connection and an 12G-SDI SMPTE compatible optical SDI module. These optical fiber models include Optical to HDMI, HDMI to Optical, Optical to Analog, Analog to Optical, Optical to Audio and Audio to Optical.
“Teranex Mini combines the legendary quality of Teranex and the incredible 24/7 reliability of Blackmagic mini converters together in a brand new design that we think customers are going to love,” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design, “Converters are mission critical products that keep every facility and studio running, so we’ve worked extremely hard to build in the features and options customers want and that will make using converters easier than ever. Teranex Mini is a must have product!”
