Tilta Illusion 4x5.65 Black Mist 1/4 Filter

The Tilta Illusion 4x5.65 Black Mist 1/4 is a 4 × 5.65" diffusion filter manufactured in-house by Tilta for any matte box with a 4 × 5.65" filter tray, including the Mirage matte box. It reduces contrast and produces a subtle glow around light sources while limiting overall softness and retaining contrast and more detail in the shadows than a standard Mist. The 1/4 strength gives a classic diffused look that is not distracting. Glass, lighter and thinner than traditional filters.

The Tilta Illusion 4x5.65 Black Mist 1/4 Filter (TF-456-BM14) is a 4 × 5.65" diffusion filter of the Illusion line: a subtle glow around lights, lower contrast and preserved detail in the shadows — for matte boxes with a 4 × 5.65" filter tray.

No filter

The same scene without a filter: the lights on the table and in the background have hard edges, and the contrast between lights and shadows is full.

With the Black Mist 1/4 filter

With the Illusion Black Mist 1/4 filter the light sources get a subtle glow and the contrast drops, but the image stays sharp and detail remains visible in the shadows — the classic diffused look without excessive softening.

Diffusion that lets the shadows live

Black Mist is a diffusion filter: it reduces contrast and produces a subtle glow around light sources, while limiting overall softness and retaining contrast in the shadows. Compared with a standard Mist filter, more detail stays in the shadows. The 1/4 strength is subtle — for a classic diffused look that is not overly distracting.

The filter is manufactured in-house by Tilta with true colour rendition, and the glass also protects the lens against scratches and smudges. It is significantly lighter and thinner than traditional 4 × 5.65" filters.

4 × 5.65" format

The standard 4 × 5.65" format fits the filter tray of any matte box of that size — including the Tilta Mirage and Mirage Pro. The Illusion 4 × 5.65" line includes Black Mist in 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 strengths, White Mist and Full Spectrum ND.
