Ulanzi SK-23: an electric suction mount for lightweight gear. What surface does it need and what should you check when mounting?
The Ulanzi SK-23 is a small electric suction base that, instead of a lever, actively creates a vacuum. It offers a 1/4″-20 screw and can create a mounting point on a suitable smooth surface. It is interesting for lightweight setups, a phone or an action camera with a matching holder. The key question, however, is not just the weight of the device: the surface and the way you use it also decide. Here we describe the M085 base on its own, not the extended kit with an upper holder.
1 / 4After you place it on a suitable surface, suction is activated with a button. The manufacturer also states leak detection and automatic top-up. This sets the SK-23 apart from a simple passive suction cup, but it does not solve an unsuitable surface. The surface must be smooth, clean and non-porous; rough plastic or untreated wood is not a sound basis for reliably creating a vacuum. Check the suction status after mounting as well.
2 / 4On the top you will find a 1/4″-20 screw and ARRI locating holes. For your specific phone or camera you may need an additional clamp, head or adapter. The photo shows an example setup with further accessories; these are not automatically part of the base as sold. Before ordering, therefore, put together the whole chain from the surface to the device and verify the compatibility of every joint.
3 / 4Ulanzi states a maximum suction force of 1 kg. This figure cannot be taken without further conditions as a universal safe load capacity during movement, vibration or on a long lever. When mounting expensive gear, assess the specific position and use suitable independent safety backup. The base, approximately 58 mm in diameter, needs a matching flat contact surface; a narrow or strongly curved surface is problematic.
4 / 4Dimensions of approximately 58 × 33 mm and a weight of around 56 g make it easy to carry. The built-in battery charges over USB-C with the stated input of 5 V / 1 A. The manufacturer does not give an exact runtime for this model in the verified specification, so you cannot plan on a specific number of hours. Check the charge before use; to detach it, use the button designed to release the air.
The SK-23 is an interesting solution for lightweight gear on a smooth surface. It makes the most sense for a user who knows the mounting conditions and can keep checking and securing the setup.
What we like about the design: Active vacuum creation and a compact base with a standard mounting screw.
What to bear in mind: It requires a suitable surface, a charged battery and often an additional upper holder. Suction force is not a general guarantee of dynamic load capacity.
