What is UVC?

UVC stands for ‘USB Video Class’ and Blackmagic Web Presenter is a UVC device. UVC is a universal standard for video devices like webcams and now, Blackmagic Web Presenter. It allows various computer applications to use the video signal received from devices like Blackmagic Web Presenter, without the need for specific drivers to be installed on your computer.

UVC support is included within the latest versions of Windows, macOS and Linux. It is even supported by devices like Chromebooks.

My Blackmagic Web Presenter will not power on.

When Blackmagic Web Presenter is powered on, the power LED on the front will illuminate. If this does not happen, try the following:

Verify that your power socket works with another mains powered device like a television or monitor.

Check that the IEC cable works with another device. In some countries a fuse is built into the power plug. This fuse may have blown.

Finally check the fuse on the Blackmagic Web Presenter unit.

If the unit still does not appear to power on, you may need to contact Blackmagic Design Support directly and tell us about the results of the above troubleshooting step.

How can I check if my Blackmagic Web Presenter is functioning correctly?

Blackmagic Web Presenter is designed to be a plug and play device, so following the simple instructions in the manual should get you up and running with your favourite software in minutes. However, you can use the following simple troubleshooting steps to verify your device is functioning correctly:

1. If you have the optional Teranex Mini Smart Panel connected to your Blackmagic Web Presenter, you can confirm if the unit is receiving audio and video by viewing the built-in LCD screen.

2. Skype is ideal for checking if your unit is functioning correctly. Open Skype, go to the ‘preferences’ menu. Then select the Audio/Video tab. Here, you can select Blackmagic Web Presenter as your ‘camera’ device. The video should appear straight away in the preview window. If you cannot select Blackmagic Web Presenter as a video or audio source in Skype, it means your unit is not connected to your computer, not powered on or your computer has failed to detect the unit. Please contact our support team for help.

How can I create a full web stream presentation with Blackmagic Web Presenter?

There are many exciting computer applications that allow you to broadcast and stream over the internet. As long as your favourite application supports UVC, it will work with Blackmagic Web Presenter.

Each software application is different so it is recommended to refer to the specific documentation for that software on how to achieve what it is you would like to do.

The audio looks out of sync with the video.

Blackmagic Web Presenter will stream the audio and video in sync as long as it arrives to the unit in sync. You can check sync by using software like ‘Quicktime Player” on macOS and OBS on Windows. Capture a video file from your incoming sources using either of these two applications and playback the file. You can see if the audio and video are in sync. Doing a “clap” test in front of the camera to simulate a clapperboard and recording this to a file is a great way to check sync.

If your audio and video are only going out of sync only when streaming, this may be due to the streaming service provider.

Remember that your camera and other source devices may introduce their own delays into the signal chain. This may be especially true if you are using an audio feed separate from your camera.

Can I use Blackmagic Web Presenter with a USB Extender?

Blackmagic Web Presenter is designed to work with a standard USB 2.0 A to B cable. It may work with extender products, however this is not something that has been thoroughly tested and is therefore not recommended. More complex extenders may interrupt the data stream which is not desirable for real time streaming.

How much USB bandwidth does Blackmagic Web Presenter require?

The amount of data travelling down your USB cable from Blackmagic Web Presenter to your computer is entirely controlled by the application you are using. On a low bandwidth internet connection, your video conferencing application may request Blackmagic Web Presenter to provide fewer frames and thus a lower amount of data. If your internet connection speed increases again, your application may ask Blackmagic Web Presenter for higher frame rates. Because of this, the data rates on your USB cable will vary.

Can I use more than one Blackmagic Web Presenter at the same time?

It is not recommended to run more than two Blackmagic Web Presenters from the same USB hub or bus. If you do wish to use two Blackmagic Web Presenters, we recommend each unit is connected to its own USB bus on your computer. We also recommend you test your multiple Blackmagic Web Presenter setup prior to a critical project.

Sometimes my video has interference or the audio is garbled.

This can occur when there is not enough bandwidth over your USB cable from the Blackmagic Web Presenter to your computer. In this case, the unit may even stop being detected by your computer.

If this is happening, check the following:

Ensure the Blackmagic Web Presenter is connected with a standard USB 2.0 cable no more than 2 metres long. No extenders should be used.

Check that the unit is the only device on the USB bus and exclude devices like USB hard drives.

If you have the optional Teranex Mini Smart Panel connected to your Blackmagic Web Presenter, check whether the interference appears on the LCD display. If it does, it means that the video stream is already disrupted before going into your Blackmagic Web Presenter. Check your camera and cables to your Blackmagic Web Presenter.

If the problem still persists contact Blackmagic support.

There is a ‘jump’ when I switch between HDMI and SDI inputs.

Whilst you can still use Blackmagic Web Presenter to switch between different types of signals, Blackmagic Web Presenter will only switch between video inputs smoothly if the signals are of the same resolution and frame rate. This is the way all high end video switchers that are available today work.
