Ulanzi VF01: an optical viewfinder for shooting from the waist. We explain composition, compatibility and limitations.
The Ulanzi VF01 is an unusual accessory for photographers who like to compose from waist level. It adds a separate optical viewfinder to the camera's hot shoe, with a field of view equivalent to 28 mm on full frame and guide frames for 35 and 50 mm. What makes it interesting is the change in how you work, not a new camera function: it does not show a live image from the sensor, exposure or focus confirmation. Here we cover the silver C108 variant.
1 / 3A view from above lets you hold the camera in front of your body and look for shots from a lower perspective. In street or documentary photography, this can change how you move around a scene. However, the VF01 offers its own optical preview, not the image from the attached lens. Expect approximate composition and check the resulting photo on the camera, especially if you are working close to your subject.
2 / 3The body measures approximately 45.2 × 38.2 × 44.2 mm and weighs about 63 g. It will not take up as much room as another lens, yet it does affect the profile of the camera and occupies its hot shoe. The 28 mm field of view is complemented by frames for 35 and 50 mm; this is an aid for estimating the crop, not a change of focal length. If you need precise control of depth of field or exposure, the camera's display or electronic viewfinder remains decisive.
3 / 3The manufacturer lists specific supported cameras and warns that the viewfinder is not intended for the cold shoes of camera cages and extension frames. The mere presence of a hot shoe is therefore no guarantee of suitability. The best approach is to compare your model with the manufacturer's overview. For an optimal preview, Ulanzi recommends a well-lit environment and a more distant scene, from about five metres.
The VF01 is interesting for a photographer who is looking for a different way of composing and accepts its limitations. If you need a precise live preview from the sensor, a display or electronic viewfinder makes more sense.
What we like about the design: A compact optical aid for shooting from the waist and experimenting with perspective.
What to bear in mind: A separate optical preview does not show the camera's exposure or focus. Compatibility needs to be checked for your specific body.
