Ulanzi UKA02: a top plate for the Uka system. When does it make sense, and why do you need a base for quick release?
The Ulanzi UKA02 solves a small but recurring annoyance: you want to use several cameras with one quick-release system and do not want to re-screw the top plate every time. It is most interesting precisely as an additional plate for the Uka system. Before buying, it is essential to distinguish the top plate from a complete kit with a base. The UKA02 is a standalone top plate; its quick-release function requires a suitable counterpart.
1 / 3You screw the top plate onto the camera using a 1/4″-20 thread. If you equip another body in the same way, you do not have to move the plate from one camera to another. The practical benefit therefore lies not in the screw itself but in repeatedly attaching to a compatible base. Before mounting, also check access to the battery and the space around the tripod thread of your particular camera.
2 / 3The non-slip pad helps limit movement between the plate and the camera and protects the contact point. What matters is correct seating and tightening of the screw; the pad will not solve an unsuitable geometry on the underside of the camera. The plate is made of aluminium and is simple in construction. It suits a user who already knows where it will be clicked in, rather than serving as a standalone universal adapter without a follow-on system.
3 / 3The photo shows the top plate working together with a quick-release base. However, the UKA02 as sold does not include this base. The release and locking mode and the mounting of the lower part relate to the specific counterpart, for example the UKA03. Moving to another support also does not automatically guarantee that a gimbal stays balanced: that depends on the whole setup, the camera position and the stabiliser used.
The UKA02 is a targeted system accessory. For the owner of a matching base, another top plate may be more useful than another complete kit; if you are entering the system for the first time, compare the price of the full kit instead.
What we like about the design: A simple way to add another camera to an existing Uka system.
What to bear in mind: The top plate alone, without a compatible base, does not provide quick release.
