The Blackmagic SDI Expander 8x12G converts in both directions simultaneously. It converts 8 independent 12G-SDI channels to SMPTE-2110, while simultaneously converting another set of 8 SMPTE-2110 channels back to 12G-SDI. That’s a total of 16 conversion channels in a single 1RU rack-mount device. SMPTE-2110 connections utilize two 100G Ethernet ports for full SMPTE-2022-7 redundancy. A separate NMOS control Ethernet port and dual redundant AC power supplies are also available for reliable broadcast operation.
All Blackmagic SMPTE-2110 products with 100G Ethernet, as well as some 10G models, feature two separate Ethernet ports to support redundancy. SMPTE-2110 redundancy sends two identical copies of video and audio over two separate network paths. This works even better when the redundant Ethernet ports are connected to two separate switches. This redundancy is called SMPTE 2022-7 Seamless Protection Switching. It compares incoming RTP packets on both connections based on sequence numbers and then reconstructs a perfect video frame from the packet of pixels that arrives first. Switching occurs in real time and completely seamlessly, so there are no frame drops or audio errors.
