The lens has the most widely used telephoto focal length range: 70-200mm (105-300mm on NEX/ALPHA cameras with an APS-C sensor), a top-of-the-line Sony G-series optical system, powerful image stabilization, constant f/4

aperture throughout the focal length range, a 9-blade contoured aperture for perfect background blur - bokeh, a fast stepping autofocus motor, rugged lightweight aluminum alloy construction, and professional-grade sealing.

The lens' optical system can focus from 1m and provides 0.13x image magnification. It consists of 21 lenses arranged in 15 groups. The optical system uses 2 lenses of low dispersion ED glass, 1 lens of special low dispersion Super ED glass, 1 aspherically shaped lens and two specially shaped Advanced Aspherical (AA) lenses with aspherical surface. The angle of view of the lens at 70mm is 34° and at 200mm it is 12°, then when mounted on a NEX/ALPHA model with APS-C sensors it is 22° at 105mm and 8° at 300mm.

The lens has excellent aperture, which is constant across the focal length range and starts at f/4. You can zoom all the way to f/22

to work with the depth of field.

The lens is equipped with a powerful OSS optical image stabilizer and a fast autofocus system that relies on a silent stepper focus motor. The lens' high-end optics are housed in a tube made of lightweight and extremely strong aluminium alloy. Its mechanical construction is very robust and is professionally sealed against the ingress of dust and moisture into the lens interior. There is no change in lens length when focusing and zooming, and the lens itself weighs only 840g at 80 x 175mm.

The front of the lens is threaded for 72mm diameter conventional circular filters, which do not rotate making it easy to use transition and polarising filters.
