Built for motion as well

Angle-of-view change during focusing is suppressed, so the frame does not jump during a focus pull. The XD motors and the new aperture unit run quietly, focus stays reliable at 4K 120p and Full HD 240p, and Alpha bodies can compensate the remaining angle-of-view change.

Controls right on the lens

The CLICK ON/OFF switch turns off the aperture ring click stops, the SMOOTH/TIGHT switch sets the zoom ring resistance and IRIS LOCK locks the aperture. Two focus hold buttons can be customised, and Linear Response MF makes manual focus predictable.

Four XD motors for a large focus group

A fast zoom has a heavy focus group. Four XD linear motors and a new algorithm keep it under control: with the α9 III they keep up with 120 fps bursts, and tracking stays smooth even while zooming.

Three XA, one ED, three Super ED

XA elements hold resolution across the frame, ED and Super ED glass suppresses chromatic aberration, and Nano AR Coating II cuts flare and ghosting.

Floating focus

The floating focus mechanism raises close-range resolution. The lens focuses from 0.38 m with 0.23× magnification.

Sealing and fluorine

The build is dust and moisture resistant, and the front element carries a fluorine coating that repels dirt.

Eleven aperture blades

The circular eleven-blade aperture renders out-of-focus highlights round.
