Compared to the previous generation, the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II lens features internal zooming, faster autofocus, a new optical design, and is lighter, sharper, better balanced, and optimized for video. Expected availability: end of September 2025.
It is the world's first FX-format lens with a 24-70 mm range and internal zoom. Weighing only 675 g, it is also the lightest in its class.
The new NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II has been developed to give photographers and videographers more options in the field. It is easier to handle and more durable than its predecessor. The internal zoom ensures that the lens's center of gravity does not change when zooming. This allows photographers to zoom smoothly from the hand without having to change their grip, and videographers do not have to rebalance the gimbal. With fewer moving parts, the lens is also better protected against the elements – at a professional level.
Users will also appreciate the new combined focusing system and Nikon's next-generation optics. This lens is the first Z-series zoom lens to feature Nikon's Silky Swift stepping motor. The result is 5× faster autofocus, 50% quieter operation, and 60% faster subject tracking when zooming.
an 11-blade diaphragm with a circular aperture creates a more natural and circular bokeh, while Nikon's highest-quality Meso Amorphous Coat and ARNEO anti-reflective coatings suppress reflections and ghosting for worry-free shooting in harsh lighting conditions.
The lens's performance when shooting close-up subjects has been significantly improved: thanks to the reduced minimum focus distance, users of the new NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II lens can get closer to their subjects, and the maximum image magnification has been increased, all while maintaining a constant lens barrel length.
Key features:
- Best in its class: theworld's first professional 24-70mm f/2.8 lens with internal zooming and the lowest weight in its class at 675g.
- Internal zoom: the lensbarrel remains the same length. This means that the center of gravity remains the same.
- Better control for video: internal zooming means there is no need to change the lens balance when using a gimbal, and heavier accessories can be used more easily. In addition, focal length changes during refocusing are suppressed for more natural transitions.
- Fastest autofocus yet: the first zoom lens equipped with Nikon's combined autofocus system with a Silky Swift (SSVCM) motor. For faster, quieter, and more accurate performance throughout the zoom range.
- New-generation S-series optics: for maximum image quality and a lighter lens. The optical design includes double-sided aspherical optical elements and ED glass plus Meso Amorphous Coat and ARNEO anti-reflective coatings to suppress the occurrence of reflections and ghosting.
- Smoother, more circular reproduction of out-of-focus highlights (bokeh): a circular 11-blade diaphragm and advanced optics produce a more circular reproduction of out-of-focus highlights.
- Extremely short minimum focusing distance: only 0.24 m at a focal length of 24 mm and 0.33 m at a focal length of 70 mm. The maximum magnification of the lens is 0.21× at 24 mm and 0.32× at 70 mm.
- Control ring with lock release: when activated, it provides tactile feedback; when deactivated, it allows smooth, quiet, and stepless operation.
- Focus limit switch: limits the focus range to 0.33 m throughout the zoom range, ensuring a consistent distance at all focal lengths.
- Use anywhere: internal zoom reveals fewer moving parts. Durable lens sealing reliably protects against dust, dirt and moisture.
- New HB-117 lens hood: acircular hood with a filter adjustment window. It does not need to be removed when working with rotating filters, which is practical when using variable ND filters for video, for example.
