Sony UWP-D22 wireless kit in the K33 band (566.025–630.000 MHz): the UTX-M40 handheld microphone with a built-in transmitter and a dynamic unidirectional head, and the URX-P40 camera-mount receiver. The UWP-D series combines digital audio processing with analogue UHF transmission.

A handheld microphone for interviews in the field

The UTX-M40 handheld microphone passes from hand to hand without a cable, while the URX-P40 receiver sits on the camera. It is ideal wherever there is no time to clip on a lavalier microphone or several people take turns at the microphone.

Dynamic unidirectional head

The UTX-M40 has a dynamic unidirectional microphone head that suppresses ambient noise and handles up to 151 dB SPL with 21 dB attenuation. RF output switches between 30 and 5 mW, and it runs for about 8 hours on two AA batteries.

Cable-free with the SMAD-P5

The optional SMAD-P5 Multi Interface Shoe adaptor seats the URX-P40 receiver in the shoe of a compatible Sony camera or camcorder. Audio goes into the camera digitally without A/D and D/A conversion, the receiver is powered by the camera and its status shows in the viewfinder.

One microphone for several cameras

The microphone sends its frequency to the receiver, so you can quickly tune it to several receivers at once. On multi-camera shoots there is no need to tune each receiver by hand.

Interchangeable microphone head

The head can be replaced with another microphone head with a 31.3 mm thread diameter and 1.0 mm pitch.

True diversity reception

Two independent receiver sections and two angle-adjustable antennas: the receiver always picks the stronger signal.

AUTO GAIN and +15 dB

AUTO GAIN mode with a limiter watches the input level for you, and the +15 dB boost helps when the microphone is further from the mouth.

Works with older systems

The kit works with the Sony UWP and WL-800 systems, and the handheld microphone can also be synced by infrared from the earlier URX-P03, URX-P03D and URX-S03D receivers.

The UWP-D22 combines digital audio processing for clean sound with analogue UHF transmission and true diversity reception that stays reliable even under difficult shooting conditions. The rugged, lightweight kit includes a handheld microphone with a built-in transmitter and a unidirectional head optimised for speech. The handheld microphone is ideal when a lavalier microphone cannot be placed conveniently or when you need to pass the microphone quickly between several people. The kit also includes a low-profile camera-mount receiver designed for mobility with compact camcorders and smaller DSLR and mirrorless cameras.

Sony camera owners can use the SMAD-P5 digital Multi Interface Shoe adaptor (sold separately), which provides a direct, clean digital audio connection to selected cameras with a digital Multi Interface Shoe. The UWP-D22 is backward compatible with the Sony WL-800 and UWP series.

Professional features that speed up your work

Automatic channel setting via NFC

Press and hold the NFC SYNC button and the receiver scans for the clearest free channel. Then simply hold the transmitter next to the receiver, the channel setting transfers automatically and you are ready to go.

Unlike purely digital systems, the UWP-D22 lets you send a single microphone to several cameras at once, which is useful for broadcast work. Fast NFC communication makes setting up multiple receivers easy.

AUTO GAIN against distortion

AUTO GAIN mode saves you the time and trouble of setting and watching the input level on the transmitter. A limiter helps prevent distortion, which is useful when you do not know how loudly the presenter will speak.

The +15 dB gain boost mode raises the microphone gain by 15 dB for situations where the microphone is not close enough to the speaker's mouth and the level is insufficient.

The input level can also be set manually.

High-visibility OLED display for indoor and outdoor use

The handheld microphone and the receiver both have an easy-to-read OLED display. Its quick response shows the operating status clearly and accurately in real time, even in bright sunlight.

Channel memory

Channel memory lets you switch the receiver at the press of a button, for example between the groom's lavalier microphone and the microphone for interviewing wedding guests. It is just as quick to change microphones during a corporate presentation or to switch to a backup microphone.

Filter against occupancy sensor interference

Two levels of filtering help remove the interference caused by the ultrasonic occupancy sensors that modern buildings use to switch off the lights when people leave a room.

Reliable reception with true diversity

For stable audio, the UWP-D receiver uses true diversity technology with two antennas and two independent receiver sections. It compares both RF signals and automatically outputs the stronger one, keeping dropouts to a minimum.

The angle of both antennas can be adjusted, which further helps prevent signal dropouts.

The K33 version operates from 566.025 to 630.000 MHz (UHF-TV channels 33–40).

High-quality sound with digital processing

Unlike traditional analogue wireless systems, the UWP-D complements proven analogue UHF transmission with Sony's own digital audio processing. Transients and consonants are reproduced more accurately, so the sound is clear, natural, intelligible and nuanced.

The handheld microphone has a dynamic microphone head with a unidirectional pattern that suppresses unwanted background noise, making it suitable for noisy places such as trade show floors or busy public areas.

A compact build, ready for the camera

The UWP-D22 has a robust all-metal construction and a light handheld microphone with a built-in transmitter, both of which stand up to demanding conditions.

The supplied shoe mount adaptor lets you mount the receiver on the camera with minimal extra weight. Cables for cameras with a 3.5 mm or XLR audio input are included.

Direct digital audio via the SMAD-P5 adaptor

The SMAD-P5 digital Multi Interface Shoe adaptor connects the receiver to XDCAM camcorders and selected Sony cameras with a digital Multi Interface Shoe.

• The direct digital connection bypasses the receiver's D/A converter and the camera's A/D converter, for better sound quality and low noise.
• The camera viewfinder shows audio information such as the RF level, mute status and the transmitter low-battery warning.
• Without cables, setup in the field is fast.
• Compatible models include the α7R IV mirrorless camera and the PXW-Z280 and PXW-Z190 XDCAM camcorders.

Several power options

Two AA batteries (alkaline, NiMH rechargeable or lithium) power the handheld microphone for about 8 hours and the receiver for about 6 hours.

The accumulated running time display shows how long the batteries have been in use.

The receiver can also be powered through its USB-C port, so it runs for many hours from a USB power bank or indefinitely from mains power.

With the SMAD-P5 adaptor, the receiver takes its power directly from Sony cameras with a Multi Interface Shoe.

The receiver's detachable battery compartment allows quick battery changes on set.

Headphone monitoring on location

If your camera has no headphone jack, you can monitor the sound through the receiver's headphone output while recording.

When the director or crew use the receiver as a personal monitor, monitor mode lets you adjust the headphone volume on the fly with the + and − buttons.

Other features

• The handheld microphone has two RF output settings: 5 mW saves the batteries, while 30 mW gives more reserve against interference in environments with many transmitters.
• The low-cut filter reduces wind and machinery noise: OFF / LOW (100 Hz) / MID (150 Hz) / HIGH (200 Hz).
• The receiver output level can be adjusted over ±12 dB, which helps with cameras without manual input level control.
• Simple menus make operation easy, while advanced menus offer detailed settings.
• The POWER/MUTE button on the handheld microphone can mute on one press and restore the sound on the next, or mute only while it is held; in PTT HOLD mode it works the other way round, passing audio only while pressed, so it serves as a push-to-talk button.
• Up to 16 systems can operate simultaneously at one location.

Expand your setup

You can add the UTX-B40 bodypack transmitter with an omnidirectional lavalier microphone to the kit, ideal for hands-free interviews.

For clearer speech in noisy environments, the bodypack transmitter also works with the ECM-322BMP headset microphone.

The UTX-P40 plug-on transmitter with +48 V phantom power lets you connect any handheld microphone for street interviews or a shotgun microphone for wireless boom work.

Compatibility with other Sony wireless systems

A UWP-D transmitter can be used with a UWP or WL-800 series receiver, and a UWP or WL-800 series transmitter can be used with a UWP-D receiver.
