Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Express HD is a portable SD and HD capture and playback device for video up to 1080p60 that connects to computers with USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 and is powered directly from them. It has a 3G-SDI input, two 3G-SDI outputs for fill and key, an HDMI output, analog video and audio inputs, reference and RS-422. It takes up only a third of a rack width.
UltraStudio Express HD combines professional 3G-SDI with inputs for older analog sources and is powered from the computer USB-C port. It suits a mobile edit suite, a small studio and digitizing archive tapes.

The device is powered from a USB-C port with 40Gbps signaling, so it runs from a laptop battery without another power source. At one third of a rack width you can fit up to three units in a single rack unit.
The HDMI 1.4b output sends the picture to a big screen television or projector, so you can check the edit and color on a real display.
The two 3G-SDI outputs serve normal monitoring as well as separate fill and key for graphics and titles.
When playing back HD formats, SDI output B down converts the picture to SD in 10-bit hardware, in letterbox, anamorphic 16:9 or center cut 4:3 style.
The RS-422 port controls decks, and the Tri-Sync or Black Burst reference input synchronizes playback with broadcast systems.
The 3G-SDI input accepts signals from cameras and studio equipment, while analog component or composite video and two 6.35 mm audio inputs (balanced and unbalanced) help digitize older tapes from broadcast decks. Captured video goes to your editing software or to the free Media Express application.

All formats up to 1080p60 are captured and played back in full 10-bit YUV, and up to 1080p30 and in 2K DCI also in 12-bit RGB. The device works with Apple ProRes and DNxHD as well as uncompressed video, which is a pixel-for-pixel copy of the source.
The Teranex Mini Smart Panel attaches to the front of the device and adds buttons and a color display showing a video preview, audio levels and status.

A single USB-C cable carries video and power. The drivers are available for macOS, Windows and Linux, and the device works with DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, Media Composer and streaming applications.
The rear has the USB-C port (USB 40Gbps), HDMI output, SDI input, two SDI outputs, a reference input, analog component and composite video inputs, two analog audio inputs and the Remote connector for RS-422. The front has DIP switches and a USB port.

The device measures 5.51 × 6.69 × 1.75 in (140 × 170 × 44 mm, w × d × h) and weighs 1.34 lb (610 g).
