SmallRig 35mm External Optical Viewfinder 6172

The SmallRig 6172 external optical viewfinder slides into the hot shoe and lets you compose by eye instead of by screen. Five groups of glass with 93% transmission give a bright image with 3:2 frame lines and a field of view matching 35 mm on full frame.

The SmallRig 6172 is a 35 mm external optical viewfinder. It brings back the way we framed in the film era: you look through glass with your eye rather than at a screen. The view is natural and free of the glare and colour shifts a bright display introduces.

The optical system uses five groups of high-quality glass with up to 93% light transmission, so the image is bright, contrasty and shows minimal distortion. Built-in 3:2 frame lines mark out the picture area and make composing easier. The field of view matches a 35 mm focal length on full frame; on APS-C cameras the finder pairs best with a 23 mm lens.

The finder mounts into the camera hot shoe via a cold shoe foot. A silicone pad on the underside protects the shoe contacts from scratches. The body is aluminum alloy, the optics are optical glass, and the whole thing weighs 32.7 g.

The diopter is fixed at a nominal -0.52 D and is designed for comfortable viewing at roughly 0.1 to 3 m. Users with normal vision or mild myopia will do fine without glasses; with stronger myopia or hyperopia we recommend looking through your own corrective eyewear — the 15.5 mm eye relief allows for that. For the full 89% field of view, keep your eye as close to the eyepiece as possible and look straight down the axis.
