Rubber Hood for Tilta Mirage

The Tilta MB-T16-RH rubber hood is the lighter, softer stand-in for the rigid hood that comes with the Mirage matte box. It snaps on in its place without tools and belongs wherever a hard edge would get in the way or could hurt someone — stunt shots, extreme close-ups, work right up against actors. It is made of flexible rubber, black; it cannot be combined with the top flag.

The Tilta Rubber Hood for Mirage is a rubber hood for the Tilta Mirage matte box. The original front hood comes off the matte box and the rubber one snaps into the same place — the whole swap is quick release, no screws and no tools, so it can be done between two shots right on set.

Snaps on in place of the rigid hood

Mirage carries its front hood on a quick-release latch: take the rigid one off, snap the rubber one on, and the matte box is ready. Nothing else changes — the filter cartridges, the adapter ring on the lens and the support stay as they were. Just as quickly the build goes back to its original form when the stiff hood or the top flag is needed again, which the rubber version does not carry.

Soft where a hard edge is a problem

Rubber gives: on impact it bends and damages neither itself nor whatever it hits. That is exactly why it suits stunt shots, where the camera runs close past people, and extreme close-ups, where the front edge of the matte box ends up centimeters from an actor or an object. It is also lighter than the rigid hood, so it takes weight off the whole build, and the shading against side light — the reason you have a matte box — remains.

The Tilta Mirage matte box

Mirage is a lightweight matte box for 95 mm circular filters: it mounts to the lens with an adapter ring matching the filter thread, filters sit in stackable cartridges and an optional wireless motor turns the VND module. The parts of the Mirage family combine — rings, cartridges, VND, 15 mm rod support and hood all belong to the same matte box, including this one.
