Product description

NiSi Circular Black Mist 1/8 95 mm is a diffusion filter for lenses with a 95 mm thread that gives photos and video a cinematic look. It softly diffuses highlights, adds a gentle glow around light sources, lowers harsh contrast and softens skin, wrinkles and blemishes, while blacks stay deep. The 1/8 strength is subtle – ideal for everyday video, interviews and documentary. Optical glass in a durable brass frame, derived from NiSi's Allure Mist cinema range.

Looking for the soft, glowing look of cinema without spending hours in post? The NiSi Circular Black Mist 1/8 95 mm is a diffusion filter for lenses with a 95 mm filter thread, born from NiSi's cinema range Allure Mist Black. It delicately diffuses highlights and softens shadows, so harsh contrast turns into a balanced tonal range; light sources get a gentle halo and skin looks smoother, with wrinkles and blemishes softened. At 1/8 the effect is subtle – most viewers will not notice the filter, only a more pleasant, filmic image. The filter is made of optical glass in a durable brass frame and works for both stills and video.

Portrait without filter and with NiSi Black Mist

KEY FEATURES

  • Cinematic look: diffused highlights, gentle glow around lights.
  • Strength 1/8: subtle, natural effect for everyday shooting.
  • Flattering skin: softens wrinkles, blemishes and imperfections.
  • Balanced tones: lower harsh contrast, blacks stay deep.
  • Photo and video: derived from NiSi Allure Mist Black cinema filters.
  • Brass frame + optical glass: durable and precise.
  • Sizes: 49, 52, 67, 72, 77, 82, 95 mm.

WHEN TO USE A BLACK MIST FILTER

Black Mist works best when there is light in the frame – backlight, street lights, candles, reflections.

  • Portraits and weddings: softer skin and a romantic glow in backlight.
  • Music videos and short films: the classic cinematic look.
  • Night city and concerts: glowing street lights and stage lights.
  • Interviews and corporate video: a more pleasant, less 'digital' image.
  • Product and food: soft highlights on glass and metal.

THE EFFECT – WITH AND WITHOUT BLACK MIST

Without filter vs NiSi Black Mist 1/8

Without filter (left) and with Black Mist 1/8 (right) – gentle glow around the light, subtle softening.

Light source with Black Mist 1/8, 1/4, 1/2

The same light without filter and with Black Mist 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 – the higher the strength, the bigger the glow.

ADVANTAGES OVER ADDING THE EFFECT IN POST

  • Real optical glow: light blooms naturally in the lens – hard to fake convincingly in software.
  • Saves editing time: the look is in the footage straight out of camera.
  • Consistent look: the same effect on every shot and every camera with the same strength.

WHICH FILTER DO I NEED?

What it does Best for Example on syntex.sk
UV / protective Clear glass that protects the front lens from dust, rain, sand and scratches; no visible effect on the picture. Everyday shooting, travel, beach, rain, events. TTArtisan Slim PRO UV
Polarizer (CPL) Removes reflections from water, glass and leaves, deepens blue skies, increases saturation. Landscapes, water, architecture, cars, travel. K&F Concept A Series CPL
ND (neutral density) Darkens the whole image evenly by a fixed number of stops, without changing colours. Long exposures, smooth water, bright-light video, wide aperture in sun. K&F Concept Nano-X ND64
Variable ND (VND) ND with adjustable strength – turn the ring to set how much light is cut. Video outdoors, quickly changing light. Moment Variable ND 2–5 stop
Black Mist / diffusion Softens highlights and skin, adds a gentle glow and a cinematic look. Portraits, video, weddings, night lights. K&F Concept Nano-X Black Mist 1/4
Square filter system Holder with square / rectangular filters (ND, graduated ND); one set fits several lenses via adapter rings. Serious landscape photography, sunsets, graduated skies. K&F Concept 100 mm square filter holder

HOW TO USE A BLACK MIST FILTER

A Black Mist filter softens highlights and gives light sources a gentle glow, lowers contrast slightly and smooths skin – the look of cinema lenses and classic film. Unlike white diffusion it keeps blacks deep.

  1. Choose the strength – 1/8 is subtle (everyday video, interviews), 1/4 is clearly visible (portraits, weddings, music videos), 1/2 is strong and dreamy.
  2. Screw it on and shoot normally – exposure does not change noticeably.
  3. Look for light sources – the effect is strongest with backlight, street lights, candles and sun reflections; in flat light it is subtle.
  4. Combine with an ND or VND outdoors when you want a wide aperture and the right video shutter speed.

Common mistakes:

  • Too strong for the scene – a 1/2 in bright midday light can look washed out; use 1/8 or 1/4.
  • Expecting it to fix focus – Black Mist does not blur detail; sharpness stays, only highlights are softened.
  • Mixing strengths between cameras – in a multi-camera shoot use the same strength on all cameras.

HOW TO FIND YOUR FILTER SIZE

The filter thread is printed on the front of the lens barrel or inside the lens cap, marked with the ø symbol (for example ø95). The filter size must be exactly the same – this filter is 95 mm. The table below shows typical sizes, but always check your own lens.

Typical filter thread
Compact and pancake lenses, small primes 37 – 52 mm
Kit zooms and standard primes 49 – 67 mm
Standard zooms f/4, many travel zooms 67 – 77 mm
Professional f/2.8 zooms 77 – 82 mm
Large telephoto and some ultra-wide zooms 86 – 105 mm

Tip – one filter for several lenses: buy the filter for your largest filter thread and use step-up rings for lenses with smaller threads, for example a K&F Concept step-up / step-down ring set. A step-up ring goes from a smaller lens thread to a larger filter (e.g. 67 → 77 mm) and does not cause vignetting; a step-down ring (larger lens, smaller filter) usually does. The only drawback: the standard lens hood and lens cap may not fit with the ring attached.

FROM NiSi CINEMA FILTERS

The NiSi Circular Black Mist is derived from NiSi's acclaimed cinema range Allure Mist Black. It is made of optical glass for clean image quality and comes in a durable brass frame.

COMBINING FILTERS

  • CPL + ND: for long exposures of water with the reflections removed. Put the ND filter on the lens first and the CPL in front, so you can still rotate it.
  • Two filters at most: every extra layer of glass adds risk of flare, reflections and loss of sharpness; more than two filters on a wide-angle lens almost always cause vignetting.
  • Slim frames for wide angles: on lenses wider than about 24 mm (full frame) use slim filters and check the corners at the widest focal length.
  • One filter instead of two: combined filters such as ND + CPL in one frame avoid stacking altogether.
  • Systems for faster work: filter systems with an adapter ring (magnetic or press-fit, e.g. NiSi Swift) let you add or swap filters without unscrewing them each time.

USE IT WITH

WHICH BLACK MIST STRENGTH TO CHOOSE?

NiSi Circular Black Mist is available in three strengths. The higher the number, the stronger the glow and softening.

Effect Typical use Note
Black Mist 1/8 (this filter) Subtle – slightly softer highlights Everyday video, interviews, corporate, documentary Almost invisible until there is a bright light source
Black Mist 1/4 Clearly visible glow and softer skin Portraits, weddings, music videos, short films The most popular all-round strength
Black Mist 1/2 Strong, dreamy glow Night scenes, creative and fashion work Can look washed out in flat midday light

BLACK MIST 1/8 VS OTHER STRENGTHS

  • 1/8 vs 1/4: 1/8 is subtle and invisible in most scenes; 1/4 is a clearly visible glow.
  • 1/8 vs 1/2: 1/2 is strong and dreamy – a creative effect rather than an everyday filter.

CARE AND CLEANING

  1. Blow off dust first – a blower or a soft brush removes sand and grit that could scratch the glass.
  2. Clean fingerprints and drops with a Lenspen cleaning pen or a dry K&F Concept microfibre cloths; wipe from the centre outwards.
  3. Do not breathe on the glass and do not use household cleaners – they can damage the coating.
  4. Store filters in a case, such as the Moment filter case or Lowepro GearUp Filter Pouch 100, not loose in a bag.
  5. Do not over-tighten – if a filter gets stuck, a rubber filter wrench or a rubber glove helps; never use tools that bend the frame.
  6. Cold to warm – after coming in from the cold, let the filter warm up in a closed bag before cleaning to avoid condensation.
