The Neumann USM 69 i is a premium stereo condenser microphone featuring two independently adjustable dual-diaphragm capsules in a single housing. With selectable polar patterns, rotatable capsules, and exceptionally low self-noise, it is an ideal solution for professional stereo recording techniques such as XY and MS, as well as high-end studio, broadcast, and orchestral applications.
The Neumann USM 69 i is a versatile reference-class stereo microphone designed for demanding professional recording environments. Combining two independently controllable condenser microphone systems within a single microphone body, the USM 69 i provides extraordinary flexibility for stereo recording while maintaining the legendary sound quality associated with Neumann microphones.
The microphone features two dual-diaphragm pressure-gradient capsules mounted one above the other. Each capsule can be rotated independently by up to 270°, allowing precise adjustment of the stereo recording angle for XY, MS, and other stereo techniques. Because the capsules are positioned extremely close together, stereo recordings retain excellent mono compatibility, with directional differences created by level variations rather than time delays.
Each capsule offers five selectable polar patterns—omnidirectional, wide cardioid, cardioid, supercardioid, and figure-8—adjusted via dedicated rotary switches located beneath the microphone head. This flexibility allows engineers to tailor the microphone's response to virtually any recording scenario.
The USM 69 i incorporates two independent, ultra-low-noise amplifier circuits with high output capability, ensuring accurate capture of both subtle distant sounds and high-level sound sources. Built-in active filtering reduces subsonic disturbances such as wind and handling noise while protecting the output transformers from low-frequency overload.
In addition to stereo recording, the microphone can also function as two independent mono microphones, providing additional versatility for complex recording setups. Its robust design and reliable circuitry ensure dependable operation even in demanding professional environments.
Supplied with a protective wooden case, the Neumann USM 69 i remains one of the most respected stereo microphones for orchestral recording, broadcasting, film scoring, choir recording, and critical studio applications.
