The Neumann USM 69 i is a premium large-diaphragm stereo condenser microphone featuring two independently adjustable dual-diaphragm capsules in a single housing. Designed for professional stereo recording, it supports both XY and MS stereo techniques, offers five selectable polar patterns per capsule, and features capsules that rotate up to 270° relative to each other. With exceptionally low self-noise, high SPL handling, and outstanding mono compatibility, the USM 69 i is a versatile solution for orchestral recording, broadcasting, film production, and studio applications.
The Neumann USM 69 i is a high-end stereo condenser microphone engineered for professional recording environments where maximum flexibility, accuracy, and reliability are required. Combining two independent microphone systems within a single microphone body, the USM 69 i enables a wide variety of stereo recording techniques while maintaining the renowned sound quality and engineering standards of Neumann microphones.
The microphone incorporates two pressure-gradient transducers, each equipped with a dual-diaphragm capsule made from gold-sputtered polyester film. The capsules are positioned one above the other and can be rotated up to 270° relative to each other, allowing precise adjustment of stereo pickup angles for both XY and MS stereo recording techniques.
Each capsule features independently selectable polar patterns controlled by dedicated rotary switches located beneath the microphone head. Users can choose between omnidirectional, wide cardioid, cardioid, supercardioid, and figure-of-eight patterns for each capsule, providing exceptional flexibility for capturing everything from solo instruments and vocals to orchestras, ensembles, ambience, and broadcast content.
Because the capsules are mounted extremely close together, signals arriving from different directions produce level differences rather than time differences. This design ensures excellent mono compatibility, allowing stereo recordings to be summed to mono without phase-related interference or coloration.
The USM 69 i utilizes two independent ultra-low-noise amplifier circuits that deliver outstanding dynamic range and clarity. This allows the microphone to accurately reproduce both delicate distant sounds and powerful nearby sources. Each amplifier includes an active subsonic filter that reduces wind noise, handling noise, and other low-frequency disturbances while protecting the output transformers from overload.
The dual-channel design also allows the microphone to function as two independent mono microphones with different polar patterns simultaneously, offering additional creative flexibility. Even in the unlikely event of a DC converter failure, an integrated diode protection circuit keeps both microphone systems operational, automatically switching to cardioid mode with only a minor reduction in sensitivity.
Available in matte nickel and matte black finishes, the USM 69 i is a premium stereo microphone solution for demanding recording professionals.
