Megadap Leica M – Canon RF Autofocus Adapter (M2RF)

Megadap M2RF is an electronic autofocus adapter that lets you use manual Leica M-mount lenses on full-frame and APS-C Canon RF mirrorless cameras. Its motorised 4.5 mm helical movement enables responsive autofocus, Eye Detection, Subject Tracking and AF-C, while also extending the close-focus range of classic M lenses. The camera and lens shown in the images are not included.

Precise electronic helical drive

A high-speed coreless motor, globoid worm reduction and dual Hall-effect sensing move the complete lens smoothly and precisely. The 4.5 mm travel can focus beyond the usual close-focus limit of many M-mount lenses and opens up useful close-up possibilities.

Precise focus drive

The gearbox delivers a high reduction ratio in a compact housing, and the low-inertia motor responds instantly to the camera.

Focus closer than the lens alone

Most M-mount lenses focus no closer than 0.7 m. The adapter's 4.5 mm travel pushes that limit down to as close as 0.3 m with no macro attachment. The actual minimum distance depends on the focal length and the lens's own close-focus limit – wide-angle lenses focus closer than standard and telephoto lenses.

Classic M-mount character with Canon RF autofocus

M2RF brings modern focusing assistance to Leica M, Voigtländer M, Zeiss M and other compatible M-mount lenses. Canon Dual Pixel AF functions remain available through the adapter, making manual-focus optics easier to use for portraits, street photography and everyday shooting.

AF, MF and manual macro at your fingertips

The side AF/MF button switches between autofocus and manual focus with one click. In MF mode, a double click engages manual macro mode, while a long press opens lens-profile selection. The 4-step aperture lever helps synchronise the aperture shown by the camera with the value set on the lens.

Three focus modes on one button

To switch profiles, hold the button for about 3 seconds with the camera in M or Av mode. Macro can only be activated in MF mode.

Set the aperture on the lens, the adapter passes it to the camera

The adapter cannot read the lens aperture. In the Megadap Custom Tool software (Windows, macOS) you enter up to four aperture values for each profile. When shooting, turn the lens aperture ring, move the 4-step aperture lever to the matching position and the camera displays the same value. Matching data is important for autofocus speed and accuracy.

EXIF data and broad M-lens compatibility

Up to four lens profiles can be stored and selected so the lens name, focal length and aperture can be recorded in EXIF data. The adapter supports Canon RF full-frame and APS-C bodies and M-mount lenses from Leica, Voigtländer, Zeiss and other manufacturers.

The profiles are labelled A–D, come pre-loaded with data for popular classic lenses and can be overwritten with your own. The lens name then also shows up in your photo catalogue.

More than just Leica M lenses

With an additional adapter to M mount, manual lenses with EF, F, OM, PK, FD, LR, L39 and other mounts can also be used with autofocus. The lens needs its own aperture ring, and the lens together with the adapter must not exceed 500 g. Stacked adapters add up manufacturing tolerances – if a combination fails to reach infinity, a more precise adapter helps.

Craftsmanship and details

Silver parts have matte pearl-nickel plating and the adapter body is black anodised. Magnetic contacts hold the firmware-update cable, gold-plated contacts resist abrasion and corrosion, and the 4-step aperture lever has distinct click stops.

Important: set the physical aperture on the lens and match it on the adapter/camera. Autofocus speed and accuracy depend on the camera and lens. Switch the camera off before mounting or removing the adapter and keep the electrical contacts clean.

Compatibility and use

• Canon RF cameras: EOS R, R1, R3, R5, R5 Mark II, R6, R6 Mark II, R6 Mark III, R6 V, R7, R8, R10, R50, R50 V, RP and R100. On the R50, R50 V, R7, R8, R10, RP and R100 the adapter protrudes slightly below the body, which does not affect mounting.
• Cinema cameras: Canon C50, C70, C80 and C400 mount and work normally. RED KOMODO (RF) cannot be used because of physical interference with the body; on RED V-RAPTOR the adapter mounts, but autofocus is not supported.
• Lens weight: up to 500 g including any secondary adapter. A heavier lens slows autofocus and prolonged use may damage the adapter motor.
• Focusing: with 50 mm and wider lenses, park the focus ring at infinity and let the adapter take over; with longer lenses, pre-focus with the lens ring first and let the adapter nail the focus point.
• Firmware: updated from a Windows or macOS computer via the supplied magnetic USB cable; the file is simply copied to the “M2RF DFU” drive. Maximum operating noise of the adapter is 55 dB.
