The FW1018V1 is a ten-inch field monitor for shooting on location and for directing. Its 1920 × 1200 IPS panel holds its colours when viewed from the side, so someone standing next to the camera can check the picture too. Inputs are HDMI, YPbPr, composite video and audio.

Peaking outlines the edges that are in focus, so you can see them even on a small preview. Zebra hatches over blown-out areas — anything under the hatching has no detail left and cannot be rescued in the edit.

Check field shows the image in the red, green, blue or monochrome channel alone, which helps reveal a colour cast. Zoom at 4×, 9× or 16× magnifies the detail while focusing, and full-screen mode uses the whole panel.

Anamorphic mode stretches the picture back to the right ratio when shooting with an anamorphic lens (1.3× and 2.0×). The image can be flipped horizontally, vertically or both at once, which helps when shooting through a mirror. The nine-grid splits the picture into nine fields and can magnify one of them; pixel to pixel shows the image with no rescaling.

The centre marker helps keep the subject on axis and the safe-area frame can be set from 80 to 96% of the picture. The ratio marker outlines the crop from 4:3 through 16:9 to 2.35:1, so while shooting you can see what will be left after cropping.

On the back there is a plate for Sony F970-series batteries, a DC 12 V input and a tally connector that lights the monitor red, green or blue on a cue from the gallery. The box also holds a tally kit, a sunshade and a hot shoe mount — the battery is not included.
