Blackmagic Design Studio Converter

Blackmagic Design Studio Converter is a converter for Blackmagic studio cameras with a 10G Ethernet connection (Studio Camera 4K Pro, 4K Pro G2 and 6K Pro). Over a single low cost Cat 6A cable it carries the camera video, program return, timecode, reference, tally, talkback, camera control and PoE power, similar to an expensive SMPTE fiber setup. At the control room end it has 2 12G-SDI outputs, 2 SDI return inputs, a 3G-SDI monitor output, timecode and Tri-Sync or Black Burst reference, talkback, a 2.2″ LCD screen, a headphone output and a speaker.

Video, return feeds, tally, talkback, control and camera power all travel down a single 10G Ethernet copper cable.

Like SMPTE fiber, only cheaper

The converter powers the camera over the Ethernet cable, so you need no power supply at the camera. At the control room end it breaks out all video, audio and talkback signals to standard connectors.

Camera far from the switcher

The camera needs no power supply of its own, so it can be placed far away from the switcher. A Cat 6 cable is enough for shorter runs, for longer runs a well shielded Cat 6A S/FTP cable is a good choice. The Ethernet connector locks into both units.

At the control room end

Send one 12G-SDI camera output to the switcher and the other, for example, to a HyperDeck Studio recorder for a clean ISO recording. Return input 1 carries program from the switcher to the camera viewfinder, input 2 another signal – a teleprompter, graphics or another camera – to the camera’s HDMI output.

Connectors and controls

The front panel is used for monitoring and operation, the rear panel connects to the camera and to the control room equipment.
