Blackmagic Design Media Player 10G

Blackmagic Design Media Player 10G is a capture and playback solution for Thunderbolt computers, designed for playout to live production switchers and large broadcast systems. It has two 12G-SDI outputs for fill and key, a 12G-SDI input, 10G Ethernet for access to network storage and laptop power over a single Thunderbolt 3 connection. Together with DaVinci Resolve 19 it works as a media player and a solution for replay and broadcast graphics.

The interface combines capture and playback, laptop power and 10G networking for replay, playout and broadcast graphics in DaVinci Resolve.

Playout and replay in Resolve 19

The DaVinci Resolve 19 cut page offers media player, editing and replay features. It plays common video file formats, including files with an alpha channel, which are output as a 10-bit fill and key.

10G Ethernet

The 10G Ethernet port gives fast access to shared storage, so you need no extra network adapter. It is enough for multiple video streams, for example ISO recordings during replay.

Monitoring and extended desktop

The dedicated SDI and HDMI monitor outputs stay active, so you can set up the next replay. Further SDI and HDMI outputs serve an extended desktop for the DaVinci user interface.

LCD, audio and RS-422

The front LCD shows video status, timecode and audio meters switchable between VU and PPM. A speaker, a headphone output and an RS-422 input for control from broadcast automation are provided.

Fill and key without compromise

The two 12G-SDI outputs carry fill and key, so graphics with transparency are overlaid in a live switcher. With RGBA graphics the device automatically converts the RGB to 10-bit YUV for the fill output and the alpha channel for the key output. The fill and key outputs can be muted so the video does not key on the switcher until the replay has started.

How fill and key work

Fill carries the graphic image, key its transparency, and the switcher combines them with the program on the background. The result is a smooth blend of transparent elements, ideal for broadcast graphics and stingers.

Capture and playback at the same time

The Desktop Video driver supports simultaneous real-time transfer of video to and from the computer with very low latency. The computer becomes a processing engine: it can act as a keyer or a graphics generator over the live input.

Connections

The front has the headphone output, the speaker with its button, six buttons, a spin knob and the LCD. The rear has the AC power connector, Thunderbolt 3, USB-C for extended desktop and peripherals, 10G Ethernet, the SDI input, the fill output, the key output, an SDI loop output, SDI and HDMI outputs for the extended desktop, SDI and HDMI monitor outputs, the Remote input for RS-422 and two analog XLR audio outputs.

Dimensions and weight

The device measures 210 × 228 × 44 mm (w × d × h) and weighs 1.30 kg. It is half a rack wide and 1RU high.
