The Sennheiser MZH 600 is a fur windshield for the MKE 600 shotgun microphone, made for shooting outdoors. It goes over the foam windshield the MKE 600 already comes with, and only that combination gives the attenuation that holds up in the open — the long pile breaks up the airflow and the foam underneath absorbs what is left. Without the fur, wind shows up as rumble in the low end, which can only be filtered out in post at the cost of taking part of the voice with it.
Fur windshield
The MZH 600 goes over the MKE 600 foam windshield, not instead of it. The long pile breaks up the airflow, the foam underneath absorbs the rest — only together do they hold up outdoors.
Wind writes itself into the recording as low-end rumble. A filter will damp it, but it takes the bottom of the voice with it and the speaker ends up sounding thin. Protection on the microphone is cheaper than any repair afterwards.
