The Sennheiser MZH 440 is a fur windshield for the MKE 440 camera microphone. The long pile breaks up moving air before it reaches the capsules, so wind does not leave the rumble that cannot be removed in post. The double-mesh construction holds the fur clear of the microphone and protects it in light breeze and turbulence — including the situations where there is subjectively no wind at all, but a handheld camera or walking creates it. The foam windshield supplied with the MKE 440 is not enough for that.
Fur windshield
The MKE 440 ships with a foam windshield that handles interiors. Outdoors, walking, or handheld, the airflow is more than foam can absorb — and from that point the fur is the difference between usable and unusable sound.
The fur is stretched over a double mesh, so it never touches the capsules and a still layer of air stays between the microphone and the outside. That is what makes it work in light breeze and turbulence, not only in real wind.
