The Neumann TLM 170 R is a premium large-diaphragm condenser microphone featuring five selectable polar patterns, remote pattern control capability, transformerless circuitry, and exceptionally low self-noise. Utilizing Neumann’s advanced FET 100 technology, the TLM 170 R delivers outstanding transparency, wide dynamic range, and accurate transient response for professional studio recording, broadcast, film, and television production. Available in matte nickel and matte black finishes, it remains one of Neumann's most versatile reference microphones.
The Neumann TLM 170 R is a legendary large-diaphragm condenser microphone that introduced Neumann's groundbreaking FET 100 technology, setting new standards for low-noise performance, dynamic range, and sonic transparency. Designed for the most demanding recording environments, the TLM 170 R is widely used in professional studios, broadcast facilities, film production, television, and high-end project studios.
At the heart of the microphone is a precision-engineered dual-diaphragm pressure-gradient capsule that delivers an exceptionally balanced frequency response across all polar patterns. Its superior transient response captures every detail of speech, vocals, and instruments with remarkable accuracy and without unwanted coloration.
The TLM 170 R offers five selectable polar patterns: omnidirectional, wide cardioid, cardioid, hypercardioid (narrow cardioid), and figure-of-eight. These patterns can be selected directly on the microphone via a rotary switch or remotely when connected to the optional Neumann N 248 power supply. In remote mode, the microphone's polar pattern can be controlled simply by varying the phantom power voltage, eliminating the need for special control cables.
For enhanced flexibility, the microphone includes a switchable 10 dB attenuation pad, allowing it to handle extremely high sound pressure levels without distortion. A switchable low-cut filter reduces handling noise, vibration, wind noise, and low-frequency interference, while also minimizing unwanted subsonic frequencies.
The transformerless output design eliminates the traditional output transformer, reducing distortion and susceptibility to electromagnetic interference while maintaining a clean, transparent signal path. This technology enables the use of microphone cables up to 300 meters in length without compromising audio quality.
The TLM 170 R is supplied with a rotating side-mounted suspension bracket that incorporates rubber isolation elements to reduce mechanical vibrations and handling noise. The bracket can be mounted on either side of the microphone, providing flexible positioning options.
With its combination of sonic neutrality, advanced remote-control functionality, multiple polar patterns, and exceptional technical performance, the TLM 170 R remains one of the most versatile and respected microphones in the Neumann lineup.
