The Manfrotto 172 is a compact, painted iron counterweight designed to balance studio arms and lighting stands. The locking clamp attaches directly to round poles with a diameter of 13–30 mm, allowing you to adjust the weight’s position according to the load on the arm and then secure it with a large control knob. The model is sold as a 1.3 kg version; the exact catalog weight is 1.26 kg. It therefore complements, for example, the Manfrotto 173B 20 mm mini arm.

Balance the arm without complicated assembly

The Manfrotto 172 attaches directly to the round pole of a boom arm or light stand, slides into the desired position, and locks into place with a control knob. The compact iron body adds a nominal 1.3 kg to the opposite side of the boom arm and helps balance equipment positioned off-axis from the stand.

The clamp grips standard round rods on studio arms and stands across a wide range of diameters without requiring a special adapter.

Sliding counterweight

The loose counterweight can be slid along the rod closer to or farther from the axis depending on the position and weight of the equipment at the opposite end of the arm.

The contoured control knob makes it easy to tighten the clamp and keeps the counterweight securely in place on the rod.

Painted cast iron for studio use

The durable painted iron body combines concentrated weight with a compact footprint. The black clamp features contact surfaces that adapt to the diameter of the inserted rod.

The counterweight helps with balancing but does not replace proper positioning and securing of the stand, nor does it ensure compliance with the load capacity of the arm and all joints.
