A star filter has a fine grid etched into the glass that turns every point light into a star with rays. It comes into its own in the night-time city, on Christmas lights, candles or reflections on water. The number and angle of the rays are set by turning the front ring.

The etching in this glass also splits the light into colours, so the rays around lamps and reflections come out rainbow rather than white, and run off in several directions at once. The effect is therefore stronger than on a plain star filter and looks best on a night-time street, on Christmas lights and on small reflections in a shop window.
